The SEAI Solar PV grant is worth up to €1,800. It's calculated by the size of your system in kilowatt-peak (kWp) — you receive a per-kWp rate for the first part of the system, which tapers for larger systems, up to the €1,800 cap. In practice most standard domestic installations reach or approach the maximum. Your registered installer confirms the exact figure for your system size.
Who qualifies?
- You must be a private homeowner
- The home must have been built and occupied before 2021
- The works must be carried out by an SEAI-registered solar PV installer — see our guide to finding one
- Apartments are generally not eligible due to shared roof structures
- Planning permission may be required for larger systems or certain property types
The Clean Export Guarantee — getting paid for surplus power
The grant covers the up-front installation, but the ongoing saving comes from two directions: the electricity you use directly from your panels, and the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) — where your energy supplier pays you for surplus electricity you export back to the grid. Together with the SEAI grant, the CEG is what makes the payback period on solar PV attractive for most homes.

Combining solar with other SEAI grants
Solar PV sits within the SEAI Better Energy Homes scheme, so it can be claimed alongside insulation grants, a heat pump, and other measures on the same home. Many homeowners pair solar with a heat pump so the panels offset the heat pump's electricity use.
