SEAI grants are paid to (or claimed through) the registered contractor, not directly to you as a lump sum before works. The contractor must hold current SEAI registration for the exact measure being installed — for example, a contractor registered for cavity wall insulation is not automatically registered for heat pumps. If the contractor loses or never held registration for that measure, the grant claim will be rejected even after the work is completed and paid for.
How to find an SEAI registered contractor
- Go to the official SEAI register of registered contractors at seai.ie
- Filter by county and the specific measure you need (insulation, heat pump, solar PV, etc.)
- Get quotes from at least two or three registered contractors for comparison
- Confirm the contractor's registration covers the exact measure before signing anything
Always verify directly on the SEAI register rather than taking a contractor's word for it — registration can lapse or be measure-specific, and using the register is the only way to be certain your grant claim will be valid.
One Stop Shop providers vs standard registered contractors
- Standard registered contractor: carries out one measure (e.g. insulation, or a heat pump installation). You engage them directly, and if you're doing multiple measures, you coordinate multiple contractors yourself.
- One Stop Shop provider: a single registered provider manages your entire retrofit journey — assessment, all contractors, and paperwork — from a single point of contact. One Stop Shop projects qualify for higher grant rates and can combine into up to €50,000 in total SEAI support, with a target BER outcome of B2.
If you're doing a single measure (like just attic insulation), a standard registered contractor is usually simpler and cheaper. If you're planning a deep retrofit across multiple measures, the One Stop Shop route is worth comparing.
Questions to ask before hiring
- Are you currently SEAI registered for this specific measure? Can you confirm your registration number?
- Will you handle the grant application and claim, or is that my responsibility?
- What is the expected timeline from provisional approval to completed works?
- Is the quoted price before or after the SEAI grant is deducted?
- Can you provide references from recent SEAI grant-funded jobs?
Red flags to watch for
- A contractor who asks for full payment upfront before any provisional grant approval is in place
- Reluctance to confirm their SEAI registration number or which measures it covers
- Pressure to sign a contract before you've checked the register yourself
- Quotes significantly below others for the same scope of work — often a sign of corners being cut on materials or standards
How do I check if a contractor is SEAI registered?
Search the official SEAI register of registered contractors at seai.ie, which lists every contractor currently approved to carry out grant-aided works, filterable by county and measure type (insulation, heat pump, solar, etc). Always check the register yourself rather than relying on a contractor's own claim — registration status can change.
What happens if I use a contractor who isn't SEAI registered?
You cannot claim the SEAI grant. Grant-aided works must be carried out and claimed by a contractor who is registered with SEAI for that specific measure at the time the work is done — using an unregistered contractor, even if the work is high quality, disqualifies the claim entirely.
