SEAI Grants for Boilers
SEAI does not offer a grant to replace an old boiler with a new oil or gas boiler. What SEAI does fund is moving away from a fossil-fuel boiler entirely: up to €6,500 towards a heat pump, or up to €700 towards upgrading your existing heating controls.

It's a common search — and a reasonable assumption, since SEAI grants cover almost every other part of a home energy upgrade. But SEAI's home energy grant programme is specifically designed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, so it does not grant-aid installing or replacing an oil or gas boiler with another one of the same type. Subsidising a new fossil-fuel boiler would work against the scheme's purpose.
What SEAI grant-aids instead is the alternative to a boiler — a heat pump — plus smaller efficiency upgrades to the heating system you already have.
What's actually available
Heat Pump grant — up to €6,500
The SEAI Heat Pump grant funds replacing your existing boiler (oil, gas, or solid fuel) with an air-to-water heat pump, which uses electricity far more efficiently than a boiler burns fuel. Heating Controls Upgrade — up to €700
If a full heat pump switch isn't right for your home yet, the Heating Controls Upgrade grant funds improving the controls on your existing heating system — zoned heating, better thermostats, and weather compensation — which can meaningfully cut running costs without replacing the boiler itself.
Should you switch to a heat pump, or wait?
Heat pumps run most efficiently in homes with decent insulation, since they deliver lower-temperature heat than a boiler and depend on the building holding onto it. Does SEAI have a grant for replacing an oil boiler with a new oil boiler?
No. SEAI does not grant-aid like-for-like replacement of a fossil-fuel boiler with another fossil-fuel boiler, whether oil or gas. SEAI's home energy grants are designed to support the move away from fossil fuel heating, not to subsidise it. The closest available support is the Heat Pump grant, which funds replacing an oil or gas boiler with a heat pump.
What can I actually get SEAI grant support for if my boiler needs replacing?
The SEAI Heat Pump grant (up to €6,500 for an air-to-water heat pump) funds replacing your existing boiler system with a heat pump. If a heat pump isn't suitable for your home yet, the Heating Controls Upgrade grant (up to €700) can fund improving the efficiency of your existing heating system without replacing the boiler itself.
Is my home suitable for a heat pump instead of a boiler?
Heat pumps generally work best in reasonably well-insulated homes, since they deliver heat at a lower temperature than a boiler and rely on the building retaining that heat efficiently. Many SEAI heat pump applicants combine the switch with insulation upgrades first. A registered contractor or BER assessor can advise whether your home is heat-pump ready, or whether insulation works should come first.
